SUPPORT HB170 (full text) – Title: requiring the teaching of cursive handwriting and multiplication tables. Sponsors: (Prime) Deborah Hobson , Rick Ladd, Alicia Lekas, Katelyn Kuttab, Lorie Ball
Why not also amend this bill to add Phonics, Writing (structure of), Spelling, and Reading? In some schools, these subjects have been virtually banned.
Phonics is not formally taught, kids are not allowed to keep word notebooks for writing reference, and practice work on paper for math is often discouraged. There may be no weekly spelling quizzes. Everything is to be group learning, student-directed, and group grades. There is often no longer a basal reader or word lists to learn.
